Server Performance Monitoring

In most cases, the server hosting your web site will be provided by a web hosting service (such as Hurricane Electric, the service that hosts this web site). This means that, rather than having the server hardware and software running at your business location, your site is actually running on (probably a shared) computer somewhere else in the country, which provides very high speed connections to the Internet, reliable and redundant hardware, and professional technical support to maximize the availability of your web content.

However, by turning over server hosting to another business, you've also turned over some of your capability to monitor and manage the performance of your site. While a service level agreement (SLA) can define the legal obligation of that organization to provide the requisite support, a smart customer (in this case, you or PCV Software) will use techniques at their disposal to monitor how well the hosting service is complying with the SLA.

To see an example of how this can be done, we've included a few system information pages on our site. This capability can also be added to your site, allowing you (or us, if you desire) to regularly track this important component of web site performance and response.
